Recently, I talked about the dangers of pharmaceutical heartburn medications and how they’ve been linked to increased risks of heart attack. This week I want to share with you some natural alternatives you can use to naturally alleviate your heartburn starting today.
Remember, heartburn is NOT caused by an overabundance of stomach acid like most people believe. In fact, a majority of the time people with heartburn have too little stomach acid.
You see, the real cause of heartburn is too much gastric pressure in the stomach.
This gastric pressure causes stomach acid to push through the lower valve of your esophagus until it reaches the upper throat where it’s a sent back down into the stomach and you’re sent into cold sweats with a fire in your chest.
By lowering levels of stomach acid, antacids are like a band aid for heartburn, not a long-term solution. And overtime, lowering your stomach acid can lead to a host of other gut health disasters as well since you need certain levels of acid to maintain healthy digestion.
Instead, let’s look at the main causes of too much gastric pressure.
Hiatal Hernia –when the stomach pushes upward through your diaphragm causing the LES to incorrectly. A hiatal hernia is very difficult to detect without the help of a specialist. If you have a hiatal hernia, physical therapy on the area may work and many chiropractors are skilled in this adjustment.
Chronic Inflammation in the Gut – The more common of the two… chronic inflammation in your stomach causes inordinate amounts of gas to be produced, increasing stomach pressure, and weakening the valve keeping stomach acid in your stomach.
Chronic gut inflammation is caused by a poor diet high in processed foods, overabundance of alcohol, long term antibiotic use, environmental toxins to name a few.
When your gut is constantly inflamed, heartburn arrives in the form of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD),
GERD is a condition in which mucosal damage is done to the esophagus from chronic stomach acid and pepsin being trapped between the stomach and the upper esophageal sphincter.
This “trapping” gives the afflicted person the characteristic feeling of heartburn. Having GERD can eventually lead to esophagitis, strictures, or even cancer from chronic inflammation if left untreated.
Natural Heartburn Relief
What makes pharmaceuticals so attractive for someone with heartburn is the immediate relief they provide. So much so, most people are willing to ignore the included risks.
While my ultimate goal is to help you find long term solutions for your health, I realize the debilitating effects of heartburn are miserable.
Which is why I want to cover a short-term solution: D-limonene.
D-limonene is a compound extracted from orange peels that’s been shown to provide total heartburn relief in just 20 days.
D-limonene is lighter than water, so it floats to the surface of gastric juices in thestomach.
When gastric pressure forces stomach acid into the esophagus, the D-limonene coats the esophagus and protects it from the burning acid.
This protection acts like a shield for your through and allows for erosions to heal for long term relief.
D-Limonene is also proven to increase the gastric emptying of food and gastric juices out of the stomach so that these esophageal irritants do not promote as much reflux.
Just one gram of D-limonene every other day for twenty days has been shown to reduce or eliminate GERD symptoms in most people for six months or longer.
